(Washington, D.C.) – Today media reports confirm that Democratic leadership in the House and Senate is considering bypassing a formal conference on healthcare legislation in order to meet President Obama’s deadline of passing healthcare reform before the State of the Union. In response, former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), President of the Republican Main Street Partnership, issued the following statement:
“Healthcare reform is simply too important for the process to be short-circuited in order to meet an arbitrary political deadline.
“Instead of focusing on politics, we need our elected leaders in Washington to be focused on what actually works. Few issues are more personal and more important than healthcare.
“Candidate Obama promised the American people an administration that would be the ‘most open and transparent in history.’ It’s time President Obama made good on that promise. President Obama should urge Congressional Democrats not to bypass a formal conference on healthcare reform.”
