(Washington, D.C.) – Less than 24 hours after President Barack Obama proposed a three year “freeze” on non-defense discretionary spending, the Democratic-controlled Senate voted to raise the debt ceiling by almost $2 trillion. In response, former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), President of the Republican Main Street Partnership, issued the following statement:
“If the American people had any doubt about whether or not Democrats in Washington were serious about reigning in our national debt, this vote provides a resounding answer – they aren’t. Less than 24 hours after President Obama delivers a speech calling for a 3 year ‘freeze’ on non-defense discretionary funding, Democrats votes for the largest increase in the debt ceiling in history.
“The President and the Democratic leadership should understand that their actions speak far louder than their empty election year rhetoric does.”
