(Washington, D.C.) –Last night, the Republican Main Street Partnership honored House Minority Leader John Boehner at their National Dinner with the Amory Houghton Award for Public Service.

“During his time in Congress, Amo Houghton built a reputation of independence and pragmatism. Amo Houghton knew the tremendous responsibility of public service. Tonight, we honor House Minority Leader John Boehner for his commitment to public service,” said former U.S. Rep. and current President of Main Street Tom Davis (R-VA). “John Boehner has led our party under difficult political circumstances. Throughout it all, he has focused on those core values that unite us and on articulating policies that will improve the lives of all Americans.”

John represents Ohio’s Eighth Congressional District and serves as House Republican Leader.

First elected in 1990, he quickly took on the Democratic establishment and made Congress more accountable to the American people. In his first term, John was part of the “Gang of Seven” that forced Congress to live by the same laws as everyone else. And he was instrumental in crafting the Contract with America, the bold 100-day agenda so pivotal in bringing Republicans to the majority in 1994.

On November 19, 2008, Boehner was elected by his colleagues to serve a second term as House Republican Leader. Since then, he’s led the fight against the jobs-killing Obama-Pelosi agenda and for better solutions to the challenges facing America. Boehner is working to help elect a new Republican majority in Congress that he promises will govern differently -- from both Democrat and Republican majorities of the past.

The Dinner was emceed by Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-OH). Boehner thanked the organization for the award and for its efforts and for the award. “I want to thank the Republican Main Street Partnership for this award and Amo Houghton for his years of service to the American people,” said Boehner. “The partnership is doing great work this year to help our Republican team succeed and promote common sense reforms that help families and small businesses, and I want to thank them for all of their efforts.”

The award is named for Amo Houghton, the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Republican Main Street Partnership. Houghton served for 18 years in the House representing New York’s 29th Congressional District and is also the former Chairman of the Board of Corning. Previous recipients of Main Street’s Public Service Award include Senators Norm Coleman (R-MN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Pat Roberts (R-KS), John McCain (R-AZ), former Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, Secretary of Transportation and former Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL), as well as current Main Street President Tom Davis.

“Main Street is proud to honor Minority Leader Boehner for his life-long commitment to public service and we look forward to continuing to work with him to find practical solutions to the challenges facing our country today,” concluded Davis.
