(Washington, D.C.) – Last night, the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama trotted out former Republican Congressman Jim Leach of Iowa out onto the stage in Denver to talk about Republican support for Obama. “While the Obama campaign may like to talk about post-partisanship, the reality simply doesn’t match the rhetoric,” said former U.S. Rep. and current Main Street President Charles F. Bass. “Republicans – particularly centrist Republicans – are united behind John McCain and will find little appealing in Senator Obama’s hyper-partisan record.”

Obama has compiled a decidedly partisan record in his short time in the U.S. Senate. According to the non-partisan National Journal, Senator Obama was the most liberal member of United States Senate last year. “It is hard to reach out to independents and centrist Republicans when your record puts you on the extreme left of the Democratic Party,” continued Bass.

“Senator Obama’s rhetoric notwithstanding, the truth is that his record reflects an unwillingness to ever buck his party’s leadership,” said Bass. “While John McCain has been willing to reach across the aisle and work to forge bipartisan compromise – often putting his own political future at risk – Senator Obama has instead opted to chart a distinctly partisan path.”

“Centrist Republicans are united around John McCain. Senator McCain has compiled a legislative record of distinction during his time in the House and Senate, and has shown the political courage to reject petty partisan politics and work for bipartisan solutions to the challenges that face our nation,” concluded Bass.
