(Washington, D.C.) – Today, President Obama and Democratic Congressional leaders announced they reached a deal on healthcare reform and expect a vote in the House of Representatives by July 31st. In response, former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), President of the Republican Main Street Partnership, issued the following statement:

“Democrats publicly announced they reached a deal on healthcare reform – unfortunately questions about the substance of what this reform will look like, how it will improve healthcare, and how we will pay for it, all remain unanswered.

“There is a broad bipartisan consensus that we need healthcare reform that makes quality affordable healthcare available to every American. Announcing a deal to move on healthcare reform is not news. It would have been news if the details of a healthcare reform plan had been announced. Sadly, the hard work of building real bipartisan support for how we actually go about reforming our healthcare system remains undone.

“Healthcare isn’t a partisan issue, and reforming our healthcare system is certainly too important a task to be handled in a partisan fashion. We strongly urge the President and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate to work with Republicans to find solutions that can improve healthcare for all Americans.”
