(Washington, D.C.) – As the Senate begins the debate over how to reform our healthcare system, former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), President of the Republican Main Street Partnership, issued the following statement:
“Highly contentious options, like government-run healthcare, shouldn’t be on the table. The President, along with the House and Senate leadership, should focus on centrist, common ground reforms that enjoy wide bi-partisan support.
“Medical providers, business leaders and patients’ advocacy groups have made it clear that a government-run healthcare system is not the answer. Instead of trying to force an ineffective and unpopular option on the system, we should be listening to the people who know the system inside and out, and who, most importantly, know what works and what doesn’t.
“Healthcare isn’t a partisan issue, and reforming our healthcare system is certainly too important a task to be handled in a partisan fashion. Main Street, and our centrist elected members, stands ready to work with the President and with Democrats in Congress, to work to reform our healthcare system in a way that will improve quality, lower costs and expand coverage.”
