(Washington, D.C.) – The day after the House of Representatives raised the debt ceiling, by a slim 218 to 214 margin, former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), President of the Republican Main Street Partnership, issued the following statement:

“It is time for our elected leaders in Washington to start making the tough decisions on spending priorities, rather than borrowing on the backs of future generations of Americans.

“Instead of voting to raise the debt ceiling, the Democratic controlled Congress should have shown real leadership and looked for ways to trim unnecessary and ineffective spending from the federal budget.

“At a time when families all across this country are being forced to make tough decisions about spending priorities, it is time for Congress to do the same thing. We have a moral obligation to our children and our grandchildren to reign in this spiraling federal debt.”
