(Washington, D.C.) – As the Senate prepares to vote on final passage of the Democratic “healthcare reform” bill, former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), President of the Republican Main Street Partnership, issued the following statement:
“Instead of focusing on finding solutions to the challenges facing our healthcare system, this bill focuses on one thing – getting 60 votes, by any means necessary.
“The debate over reforming our healthcare system is too personal and too important an issue to be driven purely by politics. At the end of the day, our elected officials in Washington need to ask, will this bill solve the challenges facing our healthcare system? Will it make healthcare more affordable and more available to average Americans? Will it improve the quality of healthcare and do so without mortgaging the future of our children and grandchildren?
“Unfortunately, this bill will not meet any of those important goals. For that reason, this bill should be rejected.
“It’s time Democrats abandon their purely partisan efforts to push controversial and ineffective proposals like the ‘public option,’ and instead focus on common-sense bipartisan solutions that will expand access, lower costs and improve the quality of care.”
