Lawmakers serve the public interest
when they show independent-mindedness
Sen. Ben Sasse and Rep. Don Bacon deserve credit for their recent displays of independent-mindedness. They have stood up, in the face of partisan criticism, for responsible behavior in Washington. Their actions are in line with a Nebraska tradition of similar independent judgment by Bob Kerrey and Chuck Hagel when they
served in the Senate.
REP. LEE
ZELDIN
(NY-01)
Rep. Lee Zeldin is in his fourth term representing New Yorkers in central and eastern Suffolk counties. A graduate of SUNY-Albany and then Albany Law School, he became New York's youngest attorney at age 23. Lee served four years on active duty as a military intelligence officer, prosecutor, and military magistrate, and was deployed to Iraq while assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following his active-duty service, he transitioned to the Army Reserve, where he currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel. Lee was elected to the New York State Senate in 2010, where he led the successful effort to repeal the MTA Payroll Tax for 80% of employers. During his tenure in Congress, Representative Zeldin has championed the successful effort to save Plum Island; steered a $2 billion Electron Ion Collider to Brookhaven National Lab; and led passage of the Adult Day Health Care Act to aid veterans who are 70% or more disabled.
