Lawmakers serve the public interest
when they show independent-mindedness
Sen. Ben Sasse and Rep. Don Bacon deserve credit for their recent displays of independent-mindedness. They have stood up, in the face of partisan criticism, for responsible behavior in Washington. Their actions are in line with a Nebraska tradition of similar independent judgment by Bob Kerrey and Chuck Hagel when they
served in the Senate.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart began his 10th term in the House in 2021, serving Florida’s 25th congressional district. Diaz-Balart is a senior member of the House Committee on Appropriations and is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development in addition to serving on the Defense Subcommittee. He is well known for his advocacy of human rights and democracy around the world, as well as for his staunch support of our global allies. Prior to his time in Congress, Rep. Diaz-Balart served 14 years in the Florida State Legislature in both the House and Senate chambers. He studied Political Science at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He lives in Miami with his wife, Tia, and son.
