Lawmakers serve the public interest
when they show independent-mindedness
Sen. Ben Sasse and Rep. Don Bacon deserve credit for their recent displays of independent-mindedness. They have stood up, in the face of partisan criticism, for responsible behavior in Washington. Their actions are in line with a Nebraska tradition of similar independent judgment by Bob Kerrey and Chuck Hagel when they
served in the Senate.

Rep. Bryan Steil is in his second House term representing southeast Wisconsin. Bryan is a problem solver with extensive private sector experience. Prior to being elected to Congress, Bryan spent a decade working in Wisconsin’s manufacturing industry - first with an industrial motion control manufacturer and later as an executive at a plastics manufacturer. There, he saw firsthand how burdensome federal regulations and red tape can hinder economic growth and job creation. In 2016, he was appointed by the governor of Wisconsin and unanimously confirmed in the Wisconsin Senate to serve on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. As a Regent, he oversaw the 26 UW system campuses, their 170,000 students, and a $6 billion budget. He was known as a fiscal hawk who was focused on fighting for students. Rep. Steil graduated from Georgetown University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
